GStreamer up to 1.24.9 matroska-demux.c gst_matroska_demux_add_wvpk_header uninitialized variable

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in GStreamer up to 1.24.9 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function gst_matroska_demux_add_wvpk_header of the file matroska-demux.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized variable vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-457. The code uses a variable that has not been initialized, leading to unpredictable or unintended results. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

GStreamer is a library for constructing graphs of media-handling components. An uninitialized stack variable vulnerability has been identified in the gst_matroska_demux_add_wvpk_header function within matroska-demux.c. When size < 4, the program calls gst_buffer_unmap with an uninitialized map variable. Then, in the gst_memory_unmap function, the program will attempt to unmap the buffer using the uninitialized map variable, causing a function pointer hijack, as it will jump to mem->allocator->mem_unmap_full or mem->allocator->mem_unmap. This vulnerability could allow an attacker to hijack the execution flow, potentially leading to code execution. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.24.10.

It is possible to read the advisory at securitylab.github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-47540 since 09/25/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 213055 (Oracle Linux 9 : gstreamer1-plugins-good (ELSA-2024-11122)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 1.24.10 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (213055). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
