Details
A vulnerability was found in PostNuke (Content Management System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function pnsecureinput of the file pnapi.php. The manipulation of the argument htmltext with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Impacted is integrity. Interpretation conflict in PostNuke 0.761 and earlier allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via HTML tags with a trailing "<" character, which is interpreted as a ">" character by some web browsers but bypasses the blacklist protection in (1) the pnVarCleanFromInput function in pnAPI.php, (2) the pnSecureInput function in pnAntiCracker.php, and (3) the htmltext parameter in an edituser operation to user.php.
The weakness was disclosed 02/20/2006 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-0800 since 02/20/2006. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:pnapi.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20969 (PostNuke < 0.762 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
