A vulnerability was found in SquirrelMail up to 1.4.6 Rc1 (Mail Client Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the file webmail.php. The manipulation of the argument right_frame with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect integrity. The summary by CVE is:
webmail.php in SquirrelMail 1.4.0 to 1.4.5 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web pages into the right frame via a URL in the right_frame parameter. NOTE: this has been called a cross-site scripting (XSS) issue, but it is different than what is normally identified as XSS.
The bug was discovered 02/22/2006. The weakness was shared 02/23/2006 with PHP (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-0188 since 01/12/2006. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:webmail.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20970 (SquirrelMail < 1.4.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117709 (CentOS Security Update for SquirrelMail (CESA-2006:0283)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
