Apache Spark up to 3.3.3/3.4.1/3.5.0 Signed Cookie information exposure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Apache Spark up to 3.3.3/3.4.1/3.5.0 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Signed Cookie Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information exposure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-209. The product generates an error message that includes sensitive information about its environment, users, or associated data. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Signing cookies is an application security feature that adds a digital signature to cookie data to verify its authenticity and integrity. The signature helps prevent malicious actors from modifying the cookie value, which can lead to security vulnerabilities and exploitation. Apache Hive’s service component accidentally exposes the signed cookie to the end user when there is a mismatch in signature between the current and expected cookie. Exposing the correct cookie signature can lead to further exploitation. The vulnerable CookieSigner logic was introduced in Apache Hive by HIVE-9710 (1.2.0) and in Apache Spark by SPARK-14987 (2.0.0). The affected components are the following: * org.apache.hive:hive-service * org.apache.spark:spark-hive-thriftserver_2.11 * org.apache.spark:spark-hive-thriftserver_2.12

The advisory is shared for download at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-23945 since 01/24/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

Upgrading to version 3.3.4 or 3.4.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch cf59b1f51c16301f689b4e0f17ba4dbd140e1b19 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
