Summary
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.1. This affects the function decode_cb_compound4res of the component NFSD. The manipulation of the argument length leads to integer overflow.
This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2024-53146. There is no available exploit.
It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.1. This issue affects the function decode_cb_compound4res of the component NFSD. The manipulation of the argument length with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: NFSD: Prevent a potential integer overflow If the tag length is >= U32_MAX - 3 then the "length + 4" addition can result in an integer overflow. Address this by splitting the decoding into several steps so that decode_cb_compound4res() does not have to perform arithmetic on the unsafe length value.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-53146 since 11/19/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/18/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 214457 (SUSE SLES15 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:0201-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.19.325, 5.4.287, 5.10.231, 5.15.174, 6.1.120, 6.6.64, 6.11.11 or 6.12.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 745f7ce5a95e783ba62fe774325829466aec2aa8/90adbae9dd158da8331d9fdd32077bd1af04f553/3c5f545c9a1f8a1869246f6f3ae8c17289d6a841/842f1c27a1aef5367e535f9e85c8c3b06352151a/de53c5305184ca1333b87e695d329d1502d694ce/dde654cad08fdaac370febb161ec41eb58e9d2a2/084f797dbc7e52209a4ab6dbc7f0109268754eb9/ccd3394f9a7200d6b088553bf38e688620cd27af/7f33b92e5b18e904a481e6e208486da43e4dc841 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (214457) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3756). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
