Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.173/6.1.119/6.6.63/6.11.10/6.12.1. Affected by this vulnerability is the function virt_to_page of the component ALSA. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: pcm: Add sanity NULL check for the default mmap fault handler A driver might allow the mmap access before initializing its runtime->dma_area properly. Add a proper NULL check before passing to virt_to_page() for avoiding a panic.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-53180 since 11/19/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 216493 (Ubuntu 24.10 : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7276-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.15.174, 6.1.120, 6.6.64, 6.11.11 or 6.12.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 8799f4332a9fd812eadfbc32fc5104d6292f754f/832efbb74b1578e3737d593a204d42af8bd1b81b/bc200027ee92fba84f1826494735ed675f3aa911/f0ce9e24eff1678c16276f9717f26a78202506a2/0c4c9bf5eab7bee6b606f2abb0993e933b5831a0/d2913a07d9037fe7aed4b7e680684163eaed6bc4 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
