CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.119/6.6.63/6.11.10/6.12.1. It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function utf8_load of the file kernel/module/main.c of the component unicode. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: unicode: Fix utf8_load() error path utf8_load() requests the symbol "utf8_data_table" and then checks if the requested UTF-8 version is supported. If it's unsupported, it tries to put the data table using symbol_put(). If an unsupported version is requested, symbol_put() fails like this: kernel BUG at kernel/module/main.c:786! RIP: 0010:__symbol_put+0x93/0xb0 Call Trace: ? __die_body.cold+0x19/0x27 ? die+0x2e/0x50 ? do_trap+0xca/0x110 ? do_error_trap+0x65/0x80 ? __symbol_put+0x93/0xb0 ? exc_invalid_op+0x51/0x70 ? __symbol_put+0x93/0xb0 ? asm_exc_invalid_op+0x1a/0x20 ? __pfx_cmp_name+0x10/0x10 ? __symbol_put+0x93/0xb0 ? __symbol_put+0x62/0xb0 utf8_load+0xf8/0x150 That happens because symbol_put() expects the unique string that identify the symbol, instead of a pointer to the loaded symbol. Fix that by using such string.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-53233 since 11/19/2024. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 216493 (Ubuntu 24.10 : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7276-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.1.120, 6.6.64, 6.11.11 or 6.12.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4387cef540f36c2c9297460758cc2438305a24a0/c4b6c1781f6cc4e2283120ac8d873864b8056f21/6504dd27123966dc455494cb55217c04ca479121/89933f8ab3b4cad5ac14ea56a39947d1ffe7d0e3/156bb2c569cd869583c593d27a5bd69e7b2a4264 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
