Summary
A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.3. This vulnerability affects the function ceph_mds_auth_match. Such manipulation leads to memory leak.
This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2024-56564. No exploit is available.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.3 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ceph_mds_auth_match. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ceph: pass cred pointer to ceph_mds_auth_match() This eliminates a redundant get_current_cred() call, because ceph_mds_check_access() has already obtained this pointer. As a side effect, this also fixes a reference leak in ceph_mds_auth_match(): by omitting the get_current_cred() call, no additional cred reference is taken.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-56564 since 12/27/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 233479 (Ubuntu 24.10 : Linux kernel (Low Latency) vulnerabilities (USN-7380-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ffa6ba7bdb7f07f49c9e9150b0176df066520f62/23426309a4064b25a961e1c72961d8bfc7c8c990 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (233479) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3762). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
