Linux Kernel up to 6.12.3 ceph_mds_check_access reference count

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.3. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function ceph_mds_check_access. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a reference count vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-911. The product uses a reference count to manage a resource, but it does not update or incorrectly updates the reference count. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ceph: fix cred leak in ceph_mds_check_access() get_current_cred() increments the reference counter, but the put_cred() call was missing.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-56563 since 12/27/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 233479 (Ubuntu 24.10 : Linux kernel (Low Latency) vulnerabilities (USN-7380-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.12.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch e3d1c9e2b811f13bdbbb962c2b17a6091c28522c/c5cf420303256dcd6ff175643e9e9558543c2047 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (233479), EUVD (EUVD-2024-53211) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3762). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
