Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.66/6.12.5. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function rcu_dereference of the component Bluetooth. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: hci_event: Fix using rcu_read_(un)lock while iterating The usage of rcu_read_(un)lock while inside list_for_each_entry_rcu is not safe since for the most part entries fetched this way shall be treated as rcu_dereference: Note that the value returned by rcu_dereference() is valid only within the enclosing RCU read-side critical section [1]_. For example, the following is **not** legal:: rcu_read_lock(); p = rcu_dereference(head.next); rcu_read_unlock(); x = p->address; /* BUG!!! */ rcu_read_lock(); y = p->data; /* BUG!!! */ rcu_read_unlock();
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-56654 since 12/27/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 233479 (Ubuntu 24.10 : Linux kernel (Low Latency) vulnerabilities (USN-7380-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.6.67 or 6.12.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 0108132d7d76d884e443d18b4f067cdf2811911b/f9ecc90b5d501b3a5a62d0685d5104f934bb0104/581dd2dc168fe0ed2a7a5534a724f0d3751c93ae is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (233479) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3762). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
