Linux Kernel up to 6.12.4 jfs array index

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.4 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component jfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a array index vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-129. The product uses untrusted input when calculating or using an array index, but the product does not validate or incorrectly validates the index to ensure the index references a valid position within the array. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: jfs: add a check to prevent array-index-out-of-bounds in dbAdjTree When the value of lp is 0 at the beginning of the for loop, it will become negative in the next assignment and we should bail out.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-56595 since 12/27/2024. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/05/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 216224 (Oracle Linux 7 / 8 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2025-20100)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.287, 5.10.231, 5.15.174, 6.1.120, 6.6.66 or 6.12.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b15000bcbecf27e0f7c0f149a409e5b865e28ca2/368a533152220b0a6f1142327d96c6b6361f3002/a3d408870bc19b794646871bc4c3a5daa66f91c5/491487eeddccc4bb49f2e59d8c8f35bec89c15ca/3b5d21b56c3774bc84eab0a93aaac22a4475e2c4/8a4311bbde702362fe7412045d06ab6767235dac/a174706ba4dad895c40b1d2277bade16dfacdcd9 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (216224) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3762). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
