Linux Kernel up to 6.12.4 can_create use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.4. Affected by this issue is the function can_create. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: af_can: do not leave a dangling sk pointer in can_create() On error can_create() frees the allocated sk object, but sock_init_data() has already attached it to the provided sock object. This will leave a dangling sk pointer in the sock object and may cause use-after-free later.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-56603 since 12/27/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 01/05/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 214781 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:0236-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.287, 5.10.231, 5.15.174, 6.1.120, 6.6.66 or 6.12.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 884ae8bcee749be43a071d6ed2d89058dbd2425c/ce39b5576785bb3e66591145aad03d66bc3e778d/1fe625f12d090d69f3f084990c7e4c1ff94bfe5f/5947c9ac08f0771ea8ed64186b0d52e9029cb6c0/db207d19adbac96058685f6257720906ad41d215/8df832e6b945e1ba61467d7f1c9305e314ae92fe/811a7ca7320c062e15d0f5b171fe6ad8592d1434 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (214781) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3762). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
