Linux Kernel up to 6.1.119/6.6.65/6.12.4 Setting ksmbd.conf ksmbd_vfs_stream_read streams_xattr out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.119/6.6.65/6.12.4. Affected is the function ksmbd_vfs_stream_read of the file ksmbd.conf of the component Setting Handler. The manipulation of the argument streams_xattr with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ksmbd: fix Out-of-Bounds Read in ksmbd_vfs_stream_read An offset from client could be a negative value, It could lead to an out-of-bounds read from the stream_buf. Note that this issue is coming when setting 'vfs objects = streams_xattr parameter' in ksmbd.conf.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-56627 since 12/27/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 216985 (Debian dla-4076 : linux-config-6.1 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.1.120, 6.6.66 or 6.12.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch de4d790dcf53be41736239d7ee63849a16ff5d10/27de4295522e9a33e4a3fc72f7b8193df9eebe41/81eed631935f2c52cdaf6691c6d48e0b06e8ad73/fc342cf86e2dc4d2edb0fc2ff5e28b6c7845adb9 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (216985) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3762). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
