It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.1 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function __nvme_alloc_host_mem of the component nvme-pci. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nvme-pci: fix freeing of the HMB descriptor table The HMB descriptor table is sized to the maximum number of descriptors that could be used for a given device, but __nvme_alloc_host_mem could break out of the loop earlier on memory allocation failure and end up using less descriptors than planned for, which leads to an incorrect size passed to dma_free_coherent. In practice this was not showing up because the number of descriptors tends to be low and the dma coherent allocator always allocates and frees at least a page.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-56756 since 12/29/2024. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 214781 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:0236-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.4.287, 5.10.231, 5.15.174, 6.1.120, 6.6.64, 6.11.11 or 6.12.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ac22240540e0c5230d8c4138e3778420b712716a/452f9ddd12bebc04cef741e8ba3806bf0e1fd015/869cf50b9c9d1059f5223f79ef68fc0bc6210095/fb96d5cfa97a7363245b3dd523f475b04296d87b/cee3bff51a35cab1c5d842d409a7b11caefe2386/6d0f599db73b099aa724a12736369c4d4d92849d/582d9ed999b004fb1d415ecbfa86d4d8df455269/3c2fb1ca8086eb139b2a551358137525ae8e0d7a is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (214781) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-3762). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
