This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-56782. There is no exploit available.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.4. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function acpi_quirk_skip_serdev_enumeration of the component ACPI. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ACPI: x86: Add adev NULL check to acpi_quirk_skip_serdev_enumeration() acpi_dev_hid_match() does not check for adev == NULL, dereferencing it unconditional. Add a check for adev being NULL before calling acpi_dev_hid_match(). At the moment acpi_quirk_skip_serdev_enumeration() is never called with a controller_parent without an ACPI companion, but better safe than sorry.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-56782 since 12/29/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 233479 (Ubuntu 24.10 : Linux kernel (Low Latency) vulnerabilities (USN-7380-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
