Details
A vulnerability has been found in GitLab Community Edition and Enterprise Edition up to 17.5.4/17.6.2/17.7.0 and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a algorithmic complexity vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-407. An algorithm in a product has an inefficient worst-case computational complexity that may be detrimental to system performance and can be triggered by an attacker, typically using crafted manipulations that ensure that the worst case is being reached. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in GitLab CE/EE affecting all versions starting from 15.7 prior to 17.5.5, starting from 17.6 prior to 17.6.3, and starting from 17.7 prior to 17.7.1. It was possible to trigger a DoS by creating cyclic references between epics.
The weakness was presented by xorz as 468914. The advisory is shared at gitlab.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-6324 since 06/25/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1499 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 213595 (GitLab 15.7 < 17.5.5 / 17.6 < 17.6.3 / 17.7 < 17.7.1 (CVE-2024-6324)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 17.5.5, 17.6.3 or 17.7.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at about.gitlab.com.
