Summary
A vulnerability described as critical has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.4. Affected by this issue is the function disk_zone_is_conv. Executing a manipulation can lead to null pointer dereference.
This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-57875. There is not any exploit available.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.4 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function disk_zone_is_conv. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: block: RCU protect disk->conv_zones_bitmap Ensure that a disk revalidation changing the conventional zones bitmap of a disk does not cause invalid memory references when using the disk_zone_is_conv() helper by RCU protecting the disk->conv_zones_bitmap pointer. disk_zone_is_conv() is modified to operate under the RCU read lock and the function disk_set_conv_zones_bitmap() is added to update a disk conv_zones_bitmap pointer using rcu_replace_pointer() with the disk zone_wplugs_lock spinlock held. disk_free_zone_resources() is modified to call disk_update_zone_resources() with a NULL bitmap pointer to free the disk conv_zones_bitmap. disk_set_conv_zones_bitmap() is also used in disk_update_zone_resources() to set the new (revalidated) bitmap and free the old one.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-57875 since 01/11/2025. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 230653 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2024-57875), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
