Linux Kernel up to 6.12.6 smc_clc_wait_msg return value

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.232/5.15.175/6.1.121/6.6.67/6.12.6 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function smc_clc_wait_msg. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a return value vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-252. The product does not check the return value from a method or function, which can prevent it from detecting unexpected states and conditions. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/smc: check return value of sock_recvmsg when draining clc data When receiving clc msg, the field length in smc_clc_msg_hdr indicates the length of msg should be received from network and the value should not be fully trusted as it is from the network. Once the value of length exceeds the value of buflen in function smc_clc_wait_msg it may run into deadloop when trying to drain the remaining data exceeding buflen. This patch checks the return value of sock_recvmsg when draining data in case of deadloop in draining.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-57791 since 01/09/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 01/25/2026).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 214781 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:0236-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.10.233, 5.15.176, 6.1.122, 6.6.68 or 6.12.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 82c7ad9ca09975aae737abffd66d1ad98874c13d/6b80924af6216277892d5f091f5bfc7d1265fa28/d7d1f986ebb284b1db8dafca7d1bdb6dd2445cf6/7a6927814b4256d603e202ae7c5e38db3b338896/df3dfe1a93c6298d8c09a18e4fba19ef5b17763b/c5b8ee5022a19464783058dc6042e8eefa34e8cd is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (214781) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0047). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
