Linux Kernel up to 6.12.5 sof_sdw privilege escalation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.5. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component sof_sdw. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: Intel: sof_sdw: Add space for a terminator into DAIs array The code uses the initialised member of the asoc_sdw_dailink struct to determine if a member of the array is in use. However in the case the array is completely full this will lead to an access 1 past the end of the array, expand the array by one entry to include a space for a terminator.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-57880 since 01/11/2025. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 233479 (Ubuntu 24.10 : Linux kernel (Low Latency) vulnerabilities (USN-7380-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.12.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b21a849764a4111b0bc14a5ffe987a0582419de2/255cc582e6e16191a20d54bcdbca6c91d3e90c5e is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
