Summary
A vulnerability labeled as problematic has been found in Rsync. This impacts an unknown function of the component Symlink Handler. The manipulation results in race condition. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-12747. No exploit is available. It is best practice to apply a patch to resolve this issue.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Rsync (the affected version unknown). Affected is an unknown part of the component Symlink Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A flaw was found in rsync. This vulnerability arises from a race condition during rsync's handling of symbolic links. Rsync's default behavior when encountering symbolic links is to skip them. If an attacker replaced a regular file with a symbolic link at the right time, it was possible to bypass the default behavior and traverse symbolic links. Depending on the privileges of the rsync process, an attacker could leak sensitive information, potentially leading to privilege escalation.
The advisory is available at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-12747. The exploitability is told to be difficult. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 214143 (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS : rsync vulnerabilities (USN-7206-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
