Details
A vulnerability was found in Sun Solaris 10.0/11.0 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component in.telnetd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Argument injection vulnerability in the telnet daemon (in.telnetd) in Solaris 10 and 11 (SunOS 5.10 and 5.11) misinterprets certain client "-f" sequences as valid requests for the login program to skip authentication, which allows remote attackers to log into certain accounts, as demonstrated by the bin account.
The issue has been introduced in 01/31/2005. The weakness was presented 02/13/2007 by kcope (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-0882 since 02/12/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 742 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24323 (Solaris 10 Forced Login Telnet Authentication Bypass), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38574 (Solaris 10 and Solaris 11 (SolarisExpress) Remote Access Telnet Daemon Flaw).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sunsolve.sun.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 10136. In this case the pattern |FF FA| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5121.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (32434), Exploit-DB (3293), Tenable (24323), SecurityFocus (BID 22512†) and OSVDB (31881†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
