Summary
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.8. The affected element is an unknown function of the component fgraph. Executing a manipulation can lead to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2024-57934. No exploit exists. You should upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.8. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component fgraph. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fgraph: Add READ_ONCE() when accessing fgraph_array[] In __ftrace_return_to_handler(), a loop iterates over the fgraph_array[] elements, which are fgraph_ops. The loop checks if an element is a fgraph_stub to prevent using a fgraph_stub afterward. However, if the compiler reloads fgraph_array[] after this check, it might race with an update to fgraph_array[] that introduces a fgraph_stub. This could result in the stub being processed, but the stub contains a null "func_hash" field, leading to a NULL pointer dereference. To ensure that the gops compared against the fgraph_stub matches the gops processed later, add a READ_ONCE(). A similar patch appears in commit 63a8dfb ("function_graph: Add READ_ONCE() when accessing fgraph_array[]").
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-57934 since 01/19/2025. The exploitation appears to be difficult. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 233479 (Ubuntu 24.10 : Linux kernel (Low Latency) vulnerabilities (USN-7380-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.12.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch b68b2a3fbacc7be720ef589d489bcacdd05c6d38/d65474033740ded0a4fe9a097fce72328655b41d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
