Linux Foundation Magma up to 1.8.0 Mobile Management Entity eNB_UE_S1AP_ID null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation Magma up to 1.8.0. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Mobile Management Entity. The manipulation of the argument eNB_UE_S1AP_ID with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Null pointer dereference vulnerability in the Mobile Management Entity (MME) in Magma <= 1.8.0 (fixed in v1.9 commit 08472ba98b8321f802e95f5622fa90fec2dea486) allows network-adjacent attackers to crash the MME via an S1AP `E-RAB Modification Indication` packet missing an expected `eNB_UE_S1AP_ID` field.

The advisory is shared at cellularsecurity.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-37027 since 06/28/2023. The exploitation is known to be easy. Access to the local network is required for this attack. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
