BEA WebLogic Server up to 8.1 memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in BEA WebLogic Server up to 8.1 (Application Server Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

BEA WebLogic Server and WebLogic Express 8.1 SP4 and earlier, 7.0 SP6 and earlier, and WebLogic Server 6.1 SP7 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory exhaustion) via crafted non-canonicalized XML documents.

The bug was discovered 03/20/2006. The weakness was disclosed 03/21/2006 (Website). The advisory is shared at dev2dev.bea.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-1352 since 03/21/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 87185 (Oracle WebLogic Server XML Parser Denial of Service (BEA06-123.00)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25348), SecurityFocus (BID 17167†), OSVDB (24027†), Secunia (SA19310†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1015790†). The entries VDB-2095 and VDB-2096 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
