Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in wpwax Post Grid Slider & Carousel Ultimate Plugin up to 1.6.10 on WordPress. Affected by this vulnerability is the function post_type_ajax_handler of the component Shortcode Handler. The manipulation of the argument theme with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Post Grid, Slider & Carousel Ultimate – with Shortcode, Gutenberg Block & Elementor Widget plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Local File Inclusion in all versions up to, and including, 1.6.10 via the 'theme' parameter of the post_type_ajax_handler() function. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to include and execute arbitrary files on the server, allowing the execution of any PHP code in those files. This can be used to bypass access controls, obtain sensitive data, or achieve code execution in cases where images and other “safe” file types can be uploaded and included.
The weakness was disclosed by Hiroho Shimada. The advisory is shared at wordfence.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-13409 since 01/15/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy.
