Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Gentoo Linux 0.5/0.7/1.1a/1.2/1.4. This issue affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The configuration of NetHack 3.4.3-r1 and earlier, Falcon s Eye 1.9.4a and earlier, and Slash EM 0.0.760 and earlier on Gentoo Linux allows local users in the games group to modify saved games files to execute arbitrary code via buffer overflows and overwrite arbitrary files via symlink attacks.
The bug was discovered 03/12/2006. The weakness was presented 03/23/2006 by Tavis Ormandy and Raymond Lewis Rebbeck (Website). The advisory is shared at gentoo.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-1390 since 03/24/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available.
After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 11 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21147 (GLSA-200603-23 : NetHack, Slash'EM, Falcon's Eye: Local privilege escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25528), Tenable (21147), SecurityFocus (BID 17217†), OSVDB (24104†) and Secunia (SA19376†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
