Details
A vulnerability was found in Apache Cocoon (affected version not known). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a prng seed vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-335. The product uses a Pseudo-Random Number Generator (PRNG) but does not correctly manage seeds. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Incorrect Usage of Seeds in Pseudo-Random Number Generator (PRNG) vulnerability in Apache Cocoon. This issue affects Apache Cocoon: all versions. When a continuation is created, it gets a random identifier. Because the random number generator used to generate these identifiers was seeded with the startup time, it may not have been sufficiently unpredictable, and an attacker could use this to guess continuation ids and look up continuations they should not have had access to. As a mitigation, you may enable the "session-bound-continuations" option to make sure continuations are not shared across sessions. As this project is retired, we do not plan to release a version that fixes this issue. Users are recommended to find an alternative or restrict access to the instance to trusted users. NOTE: This vulnerability only affects products that are no longer supported by the maintainer.
The weakness was presented with Xiangfan Wu From The Starmap Team Of Legendsec At Qi-anxin Group. The advisory is shared for download at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-24783 since 01/23/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.001.
The best possible mitigation is suggested to be Workaround.
