Linux Kernel up to 6.1.126/6.6.73/6.12.10 iomap_write_delalloc_scan infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.1.126/6.6.73/6.12.10. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function iomap_write_delalloc_scan. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: iomap: avoid avoid truncating 64-bit offset to 32 bits on 32-bit kernels, iomap_write_delalloc_scan() was inadvertently using a 32-bit position due to folio_next_index() returning an unsigned long. This could lead to an infinite loop when writing to an xfs filesystem.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-21667 since 12/29/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 215144 (Debian dsa-5860 : affs-modules-6.1.0-21-4kc-malta-di - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.1.127, 6.6.74 or 6.12.11 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 7ca4bd6b754913910151acce00be093f03642725/91371922704c8d82049ef7c2ad974d0a2cd1174d/402ce16421477e27f30b57d6d1a6dc248fa3a4e4/c13094b894de289514d84b8db56d1f2931a0bade is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (215144), EUVD (EUVD-2025-2616) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-0232). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
