This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2025-21679. There is no exploit available.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.12.10. Affected is the function get_canonical_dev_path. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: add the missing error handling inside get_canonical_dev_path Inside function get_canonical_dev_path(), we call d_path() to get the final device path. But d_path() can return error, and in that case the next strscpy() call will trigger an invalid memory access. Add back the missing error handling for d_path().
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-21679 since 12/29/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
