Details
A vulnerability was found in Snort 2.6.1/2.6.1.1/2.6.1.2/2.7 Beta1 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality of the component DCE/RPC Pre-Processor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the DCE/RPC preprocessor in Snort before 2.6.1.3, and 2.7 before beta 2; and Sourcefire Intrusion Sensor; allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted SMB traffic.
The weakness was presented 02/20/2007 by Neel Mehta (ERNE) with X-Force (Website). The advisory is shared for download at snort.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-5276 since 10/13/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After 3 days, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24686 (FreeBSD : snort -- DCE/RPC preprocessor vulnerability (afdf500f-c1f6-11db-95c5-000c6ec775d9)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 34053 (Snort DCE/RPC Packet Reassembly Stack Buffer Overflow).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 10160. In this case the pattern |11| is used for detection.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (31275), Exploit-DB (3362), Tenable (24686), SecurityFocus (BID 22616†) and OSVDB (32094†). See VDB-2950 and VDB-2952 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
