Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.13.0. This affects some unknown processing of the component vfio. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: vfio/platform: check the bounds of read/write syscalls count and offset are passed from user space and not checked, only offset is capped to 40 bits, which can be used to read/write out of bounds of the device.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-21687 since 12/29/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/17/2026).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 216985 (Debian dla-4076 : linux-config-6.1 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 5.4.290, 5.10.234, 5.15.178, 6.1.128, 6.6.75, 6.12.12, 6.13.1 or 6.14-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch f21636f24b6786c8b13f1af4319fa75ffcf17f38/d19a8650fd3d7aed8d1af1d9a77f979a8430eba1/92340e6c5122d823ad064984ef7513eba9204048/6bcb8a5b70b80143db9bf12dfa7d53636f824d53/c981c32c38af80737a2fedc16e270546d139ccdd/a20fcaa230f7472456d12cf761ed13938e320ac3/665cfd1083866f87301bbd232cb8ba48dcf4acce/ce9ff21ea89d191e477a02ad7eabf4f996b80a69 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
