Smart Technologies SynchronEyes 6.0 memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Smart Technologies SynchronEyes 6.0. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

SMART SynchronEyes Student and Teacher 6.0, and possibly earlier versions, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a certain packet to the Teacher discovery port that causes SynchronEyes to connect to the attacker s machine and read a value that is used as a parameter to malloc.

The bug was discovered 02/05/2006. The weakness was released 04/04/2006 by Dennis Elser (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-1648 since 04/06/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 58 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25663), SecurityFocus (BID 17373†), OSVDB (24392†), Secunia (SA19535†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1015869†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-29520. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
