UltraVNC up to 1.0.1 log::reallyprint memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in UltraVNC up to 1.0.1 (Connectivity Software) and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function log::reallyprint. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple buffer overflows in (a) UltraVNC (aka Ultr@VNC) 1.0.1 and earlier and (b) tabbed_viewer 1.29 (1) allow user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malicious server that sends a long string to a client that connects on TCP port 5900, which triggers an overflow in Log::ReallyPrint; and (2) allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (server crash) via a long HTTP GET request to TCP port 5800, which triggers an overflow in VNCLog::ReallyPrint.

The weakness was published 04/06/2006 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.grok.org.uk. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-1652. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/22/2024).

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 10320 (Web Server Long URL Handling Remote Overflow DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4351.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (25650), Exploit-DB (1642), Tenable (10320), SecurityFocus (BID 17378†) and Secunia (SA19513†).
