Details
A vulnerability was found in octokit request.js up to 9.2.0. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a redos vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-1333. The product uses a regular expression with an inefficient, possibly exponential worst-case computational complexity that consumes excessive CPU cycles. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
@octokit/request sends parameterized requests to GitHub’s APIs with sensible defaults in browsers and Node. Starting in version 1.0.0 and prior to versions 9.2.1 and 8.4.1, the regular expression `/<([^>]+)>; rel="deprecation"/` used to match the `link` header in HTTP responses is vulnerable to a ReDoS (Regular Expression Denial of Service) attack. This vulnerability arises due to the unbounded nature of the regex's matching behavior, which can lead to catastrophic backtracking when processing specially crafted input. An attacker could exploit this flaw by sending a malicious `link` header, resulting in excessive CPU usage and potentially causing the server to become unresponsive, impacting service availability. Versions 9.2.1 and 8.4.1 fix the issue.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2025-25290 since 02/06/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1449.003 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
Upgrading to version 9.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 34ff07ee86fc5c20865982d77391bc910ef19c68 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
