Mobatek MobaXterm up to 24.x AES weak iv

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mobatek MobaXterm up to 24.x. It has been classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the component AES. This manipulation causes weak iv. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2025-0714. The attack needs to be launched locally. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mobatek MobaXterm up to 24.x. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component AES. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a weak iv vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-1204. The product uses a cryptographic primitive that uses an Initialization Vector (IV), but the product does not generate IVs that are sufficiently unpredictable or unique according to the expected cryptographic requirements for that primitive. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The vulnerability existed in the password storage of Mobateks MobaXterm below 25.0. MobaXTerm uses an initialization vector (IV) that is generated by encrypting null bytes with a derivate of the users master key. As both the master key is static, and AES ECB produces the same output with the same input the IV for AES CFB is always the same. The static IV makes it easier to obtain sensitive information and decrypt data if the data is stored at rest.

It is possible to read the advisory at cirosec.de. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-0714 since 01/24/2025. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Upgrading to version 25.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
