Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU grub2 (affected version unknown). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The read command is used to read the keyboard input from the user, while reads it keeps the input length in a 32-bit integer value which is further used to reallocate the line buffer to accept the next character. During this process, with a line big enough it's possible to make this variable to overflow leading to a out-of-bounds write in the heap based buffer. This flaw may be leveraged to corrupt grub's internal critical data and secure boot bypass is not discarded as consequence.
The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2025-0690 since 01/23/2025. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
