Summary
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in abseil-cpp. Affected by this vulnerability is the function reserve/rehash. Performing a manipulation of the argument size results in integer overflow.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2025-0838. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No exploit is available.
It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in abseil-cpp (version now known). This affects the function reserve/rehash. The manipulation of the argument size with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
There exists a heap buffer overflow vulnerable in Abseil-cpp. The sized constructors, reserve(), and rehash() methods of absl::{flat,node}hash{set,map} did not impose an upper bound on their size argument. As a result, it was possible for a caller to pass a very large size that would cause an integer overflow when computing the size of the container's backing store, and a subsequent out-of-bounds memory write. Subsequent accesses to the container might also access out-of-bounds memory. We recommend upgrading past commit 5a0e2cb5e3958dd90bb8569a2766622cb74d90c1
The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2025-0838 since 01/29/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
