Linux Kernel up to 5.18.3 xen_xlate_map_ballooned_pages initialization

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.18.3 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function xen_xlate_map_ballooned_pages. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a initialization vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-665. The product does not initialize or incorrectly initializes a resource, which might leave the resource in an unexpected state when it is accessed or used. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: xen: unexport __init-annotated xen_xlate_map_ballooned_pages() EXPORT_SYMBOL and __init is a bad combination because the .init.text section is freed up after the initialization. Hence, modules cannot use symbols annotated __init. The access to a freed symbol may end up with kernel panic. modpost used to detect it, but it has been broken for a decade. Recently, I fixed modpost so it started to warn it again, then this showed up in linux-next builds. There are two ways to fix it: - Remove __init - Remove EXPORT_SYMBOL I chose the latter for this case because none of the in-tree call-sites (arch/arm/xen/enlighten.c, arch/x86/xen/grant-table.c) is compiled as modular.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-49355 since 02/26/2025. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 4.9.321, 4.14.286, 4.19.250, 5.4.198, 5.10.122, 5.15.47, 5.17.15 or 5.18.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c0d076419136a7528abc1831847099400f61d60f/f319c9b45b351019349cc779ce6721ebc211245c/29a9935a90dd32b89d04e249e0a948cb4949e7af/b49c884146e20314808c9420640b26876ff55c80/be9581f4fda795aa0e18cdc333efc1e447e1a55c/40e6078fcf186b4f452abcbffcb004e28d750395/b43387364d8291190fd4ea1322b65c337802baa2/0ddb4334f4136cd5c84885032894663a4d57928d/dbac14a5a05ff8e1ce7c0da0e1f520ce39ec62ea is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
