WordPress 2.1.1, as downloaded from some official distribution sites during February and March 2007, contains an externally introduced backdoor that allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via (1) an eval injection vulnerability in the ix parameter to wp-includes/feed.php, and (2) an untrusted passthru call in the iz parameter to wp-includes/theme.php.
The bug was discovered 03/02/2007. The weakness was published 03/05/2007 by Ivan Fratric (Website). The advisory is available at ifsec.blogspot.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-1277 since 03/05/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

By approaching the search of inurl:theme.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24759 (WordPress < 2.1.1 Multiple Script Backdoors), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at wordpress.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 10196. In this case the pattern wp-includes/feed.php is used for detection.
