It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.18.2. This issue affects the function driver_data. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: phy: micrel: Allow probing without .driver_data Currently, if the .probe element is present in the phy_driver structure and the .driver_data is not, a NULL pointer dereference happens. Allow passing .probe without .driver_data by inserting NULL checks for priv->type.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-49472 since 02/26/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 234545 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:1293-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
