Linux Kernel up to 5.18.2 pvr2_i2c_core_init initialization

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.18.2. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function pvr2_i2c_core_init. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a initialization vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-665. The product does not initialize or incorrectly initializes a resource, which might leave the resource in an unexpected state when it is accessed or used. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: pvrusb2: fix array-index-out-of-bounds in pvr2_i2c_core_init Syzbot reported that -1 is used as array index. The problem was in missing validation check. hdw->unit_number is initialized with -1 and then if init table walk fails this value remains unchanged. Since code blindly uses this member for array indexing adding sanity check is the easiest fix for that. hdw->workpoll initialization moved upper to prevent warning in __flush_work.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-49478 since 02/26/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/13/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 235744 (EulerOS 2.0 SP10 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2025-1520)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.9.318, 4.14.283, 4.19.247, 5.4.198, 5.10.121, 5.15.46, 5.17.14 or 5.18.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4351bfe36aba9fa7dc9d68d498d25d41a0f45e67/2e004fe914b243db41fa96f9e583385f360ea58e/a3660e06675bccec4bf149c7229ea1d491ba10d7/1310fc3538dcc375a2f46ef0a438512c2ca32827/a3304766d9384886e6d3092c776273526947a2e9/3309c2c574e13b21b44729f5bdbf21f60189b79a/f99a8b1ec0eddc2931aeaa4f490277a15b39f511/24e807541e4a9263ed928e6ae3498de3ad43bd1e/471bec68457aaf981add77b4f590d65dd7da1059 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
