Linux Kernel up to 5.18.2 mdp5_mixer_release null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 5.18.2. This impacts the function mdp5_mixer_release. Performing a manipulation results in null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2022-49488. No exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.18.2. This affects the function mdp5_mixer_release. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/msm/mdp5: Return error code in mdp5_mixer_release when deadlock is detected There is a possibility for mdp5_get_global_state to return -EDEADLK when acquiring the modeset lock, but currently global_state in mdp5_mixer_release doesn't check for if an error is returned. To avoid a NULL dereference error, let's have mdp5_mixer_release check if an error is returned and propagate that error. Patchwork: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/485181/

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-49488 since 02/26/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 234545 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:1293-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.19.247, 5.4.198, 5.10.121, 5.15.46, 5.17.14 or 5.18.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 1a5d1474026ea4f1a6f931075ca2adb884af39cf/22d8424913b1348c6324916745fadaeea5273f0e/883f1d52a57bf51e1d7a80c432345e2c6222477e/09bdeedc1fc53e64b8282e1de67752c69e43bdba/47e393061049aff6818d1b9fdca7351411a23fc2/46e5ce63924a96af452c4fc5ee0bb3b241e1b9f4/ca75f6f7c6f89365e40f10f641b15981b1f07c31 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
