Linux Kernel up to 5.10.119/5.15.44/5.17.12/5.18.1 bpf_trampoline_get_progs cnt array index

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.119/5.15.44/5.17.12/5.18.1. This issue affects the function bpf_trampoline_get_progs. Performing a manipulation of the argument cnt results in array index. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2022-49548. No exploit exists. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.119/5.15.44/5.17.12/5.18.1. This affects the function bpf_trampoline_get_progs. The manipulation of the argument cnt with an unknown input leads to a array index vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-129. The product uses untrusted input when calculating or using an array index, but the product does not validate or incorrectly validates the index to ensure the index references a valid position within the array. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: Fix potential array overflow in bpf_trampoline_get_progs() The cnt value in the 'cnt >= BPF_MAX_TRAMP_PROGS' check does not include BPF_TRAMP_MODIFY_RETURN bpf programs, so the number of the attached BPF_TRAMP_MODIFY_RETURN bpf programs in a trampoline can exceed BPF_MAX_TRAMP_PROGS. When this happens, the assignment '*progs++ = aux->prog' in bpf_trampoline_get_progs() will cause progs array overflow as the progs field in the bpf_tramp_progs struct can only hold at most BPF_MAX_TRAMP_PROGS bpf programs.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-49548 since 02/26/2025. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/12/2025).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 238226 (EulerOS 2.0 SP13 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2025-1635)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.10.120, 5.15.45, 5.17.13 or 5.18.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 7f845de2863334bed4f362e95853f5e7bc323737/e36452d5da6325df7c10cffc60a9e68d21e2606d/32c4559c61652f24c9fdd5440342196fe37453bc/4f8897bcc20b9ae44758e0572538d741ab66f0dc/a2aa95b71c9bbec793b5c5fa50f0a80d882b3e8d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (238226). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
