Linux Kernel up to 5.18.2 snd_jack_report null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.18.2 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function snd_jack_report. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: jack: Access input_dev under mutex It is possible when using ASoC that input_dev is unregistered while calling snd_jack_report, which causes NULL pointer dereference. In order to prevent this serialize access to input_dev using mutex lock.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-49538 since 02/26/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 234545 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:1293-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.9.318, 4.14.283, 4.19.247, 5.4.198, 5.10.121, 5.15.46, 5.17.14 or 5.18.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
