Summary
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.18.14 and classified as critical. The affected element is the function be_get_module_eeprom. Such manipulation leads to buffer overflow.
This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-49581. No exploit exists.
It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.18.14. Affected by this issue is the function be_get_module_eeprom. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: be2net: Fix buffer overflow in be_get_module_eeprom be_cmd_read_port_transceiver_data assumes that it is given a buffer that is at least PAGE_DATA_LEN long, or twice that if the module supports SFF 8472. However, this is not always the case. Fix this by passing the desired offset and length to be_cmd_read_port_transceiver_data so that we only copy the bytes once.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-49581 since 02/26/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/23/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 234545 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:1293-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.9.325, 4.14.290, 4.19.254, 5.4.208, 5.10.134, 5.15.58 or 5.18.15 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a5a8fc0679a8fd58d47aa2ebcfc5742631f753f9/fe4473fc7940f14c4a12db873b9729134c212654/8ff4f9df73e5c551a72ee6034886c17e8de6596d/a8569f76df7ec5b4b51155c57523a0b356db5741/665cbe91de2f7c97c51ca8fce39aae26477c1948/aba8ff847f4f927ad7a1a1ee4a9f29989a1a728f/18043da94c023f3ef09c15017bdb04e8f695ef10/d7241f679a59cfe27f92cb5c6272cb429fb1f7ec is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
