Linux Kernel up to 5.18.7 afs_getattr null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.19.249/5.4.201/5.10.126/5.15.50/5.18.7. This issue affects the function afs_getattr. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: afs: Fix dynamic root getattr The recent patch to make afs_getattr consult the server didn't account for the pseudo-inodes employed by the dynamic root-type afs superblock not having a volume or a server to access, and thus an oops occurs if such a directory is stat'd. Fix this by checking to see if the vnode->volume pointer actually points anywhere before following it in afs_getattr(). This can be tested by stat'ing a directory in /afs. It may be sufficient just to do "ls /afs" and the oops looks something like: BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000020 ... RIP: 0010:afs_getattr+0x8b/0x14b ... Call Trace: vfs_statx+0x79/0xf5 vfs_fstatat+0x49/0x62

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-49688 since 02/26/2025. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 4.19.250, 5.4.202, 5.10.127, 5.15.51 or 5.18.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 65c24caf1b9f5b08397c6e805ec24ebc390c6e4d/e3a232e5767051483ffad4cef7d0a89d292a192b/7b564e3254b7db5fbfbf11a824627a6c31b932b4/2b2bba96526f25f2eba74ecadb031de2e05a83ce/7844ceada44eca740d31beb3d97b8511b1ca0a9b/cb78d1b5efffe4cf97e16766329dd7358aed3deb is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
