mod_security up to 2.1 POST Data privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in mod_security up to 2.1. This affects an unknown code block of the component POST Data Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Interpretation conflict in ModSecurity (mod_security) 2.1.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to bypass request rules via application/x-www-form-urlencoded POST data that contains an ASCIIZ (0x00) byte, which mod_security treats as a terminator even though it is still processed as normal data by some HTTP parsers including PHP 5.2.0, and possibly parsers in Perl, and Python.

The bug was discovered 03/06/2007. The weakness was presented 03/07/2007 by Stefan Esser with Hardened PHP Project (Website). The advisory is shared at php-security.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-1359 since 03/08/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

After even before and not, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67124 (ModSecurity < 2.1.1 POST Data Null Byte Filter Bypass), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Firewalls and running in the context r.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at modsecurity.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (32872), Exploit-DB (3425), Tenable (67124), SecurityFocus (BID 22831†) and OSVDB (32778†). Further details are available at fadetoblack.ch. See VDB-43268 for similar entry. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
