Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.17.3. Affected by this issue is the function poly1305_update_arch of the file arch/x86/crypto/poly1305_glue.c. The manipulation of the argument link_len with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: cifs: potential buffer overflow in handling symlinks Smatch printed a warning: arch/x86/crypto/poly1305_glue.c:198 poly1305_update_arch() error: __memcpy() 'dctx->buf' too small (16 vs u32max) It's caused because Smatch marks 'link_len' as untrusted since it comes from sscanf(). Add a check to ensure that 'link_len' is not larger than the size of the 'link_str' buffer.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2022-49058 since 02/26/2025. The exploitation is known to be easy. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/27/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 238226 (EulerOS 2.0 SP13 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2025-1635)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.9.311, 4.14.276, 4.19.239, 5.4.190, 5.10.112, 5.15.35 or 5.17.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3e582749e742e662a8e9bb37cffac62dccaaa1e2/1316c28569a80ab3596eeab05bf5e01991e7e739/eb5f51756944735ac70cd8bb38637cc202e29c91/22d658c6c5affed10c8907e67160cef0b6c92186/4e166a41180be2f1e66bbb6d46448e80a9a5ec05/9901b07ba42b39266b34a888e48d7306fd707bee/515e7ba11ef043d6febe69389949c8ef5f25e9d0/64c4a37ac04eeb43c42d272f6e6c8c12bfcf4304 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
