Linux Kernel up to 5.4.189/5.10.111/5.15.34/5.17.3 aqc111_rx_fixup out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Linux Kernel up to 5.4.189/5.10.111/5.15.34/5.17.3. The affected element is the function aqc111_rx_fixup. Performing a manipulation results in out-of-bounds. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2022-49051. There is no exploit available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.4.189/5.10.111/5.15.34/5.17.3. This affects the function aqc111_rx_fixup. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: usb: aqc111: Fix out-of-bounds accesses in RX fixup aqc111_rx_fixup() contains several out-of-bounds accesses that can be triggered by a malicious (or defective) USB device, in particular: - The metadata array (desc_offset..desc_offset+2*pkt_count) can be out of bounds, causing OOB reads and (on big-endian systems) OOB endianness flips. - A packet can overlap the metadata array, causing a later OOB endianness flip to corrupt data used by a cloned SKB that has already been handed off into the network stack. - A packet SKB can be constructed whose tail is far beyond its end, causing out-of-bounds heap data to be considered part of the SKB's data. Found doing variant analysis. Tested it with another driver (ax88179_178a), since I don't have a aqc111 device to test it, but the code looks very similar.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2022-49051 since 02/26/2025. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 234484 (SUSE SLES15 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:1263-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.190, 5.10.112, 5.15.35 or 5.17.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 404998a137bcb8a926f7c949030afbe285472593/d90df6da50c56ad8b1a132e3cf86b6cdf8f507b7/b416898442f2b6aa9f1b2f2968ce07e3abaa05f7/36311fe98f55dea9200c69e2dd6d6ddb8fc94080/afb8e246527536848b9b4025b40e613edf776a9d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (234484). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
