Linux Kernel up to 5.15.33/5.16.18/5.17.1 nbd_dev_add buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.33/5.16.18/5.17.1. Affected is the function nbd_dev_add. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nbd: fix possible overflow on 'first_minor' in nbd_dev_add() When 'index' is a big numbers, it may become negative which forced to 'int'. then 'index << part_shift' might overflow to a positive value that is not greater than '0xfffff', then sysfs might complains about duplicate creation. Because of this, move the 'index' judgment to the front will fix it and be better.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2022-49143 since 02/26/2025. The exploitability is told to be difficult. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 02/26/2025).

Upgrading to version 5.15.34, 5.16.19 or 5.17.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5142720dbe51befeb25f204f912ef1ad93fba343/d42740aab3ea29578d11a042bb50ded12ad3aa8a/c6399f6f2f84921feebbf985e3819b1ad851ebe5/6d35d04a9e18990040e87d2bbf72689252669d54 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
